Black holes for eyes,
Fixed upon blind visions,
Reflecting only small images
Of a single tripod's flame,
The agèd monk prophesied,
Recalling and condemning
Old sins, perhaps,
From his own youth, speaking
In his awful voice with
Such personal intensity,
His blank, black gaze
Burning as deeply as
The flaming words
From his tortured soul.
