I stand upon the deck,
Watching waves in the bay,
Bracing to the roll of the boat,
Simple vessel built for simple toil,
Knowing I will but touch
A portion of the Pacific.
Yet, on the edge of adventure,
Old tales, some by RLS himself
Who rode these very waves,
Echoing in my mind.
(RLS = Robert Louis Stevenson author of Treasure Island and many other stories and essays, who lived a while in Monterey.)
